1. Write a
functional resume: A functional resume is basically a list of your skills
and talents on the job. This is different than a Chronological Resume, which
lists your jobs by date and employers. A Functional Resume is perfect if you’ve
had a break in between jobs and draws attention to your STRENGTHS rather than
your job history.
2. Check
the format: Is your name in a bigger font than the rest of the resume? Can
you easily read your phone number and address? Employers don’t want to search
around for your contact information; make it clear.
3. Is
the resume clean? Basically, is the paper crumpled, stained, torn? In some
cases all the employer sees is your resume and equals their image of you. Make
the presentation nice and clean…just like you!
4. Proofread.
Proofread. Proofread: THIS IS SO IMPORTANT. WE CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH.
SPELL CHECK ISN’T ALWAYS RIGHT! Show it to your family and friends for a second
opinion!
5. There is
no perfect resume: Use your resume to show who you are. Every employer is
different and is looking for different things. Don’t forget to work your
network and try to connect with people you know!
